EDITORS NOTE:

Cocker performed the opening set at an attempt to recreate the event Woodstock '94 as one of the few alumni who played at the original Woodstock Festival in 1969. He lives on the Mad Dog Ranch in Crawford, Colorado, Cocker was awarded an OBE in the Queen's 2007 Birthday Honors list for services to music.[1] To celebrate receiving his award in mid December 2007, Cocker played two concerts in London and in his home town of Sheffield. Considering the number of sonf Cocker performed at Cruzon, it was almost a concert on its own. In point of fact, it was very obvious that at the end of his performance which was obviously intended to be the opening act for Miller, that members of the audience packed up and went home, underscoring the popularity he has with those of the “Woodstock Generation.”

THE RETURN OF JOE COCKER & THE STEVE MILLER BAND

by Jeannette Schnurmacher

Amid the season's first active thunderstorm, hundreds of fans braved the fairly steady rain and occasional thunderclap and lightning to witness the opening night for the Joe Cocker/ Steve Miller Band summer concert tour on Saturday, May 24th at the Cruzan Amphitheater in West Palm Beach, Fl.

The British rocker and Woodstock legend Joe Cocker opened the evening with a terrific and spirited performance. Backed up by a dynamic band, he delivered his impassioned renditions with energy and spunk, delighting the crowd with such standards as: "Feelin' Alright", "The Letter", "When the Night Comes", and a few of his Beatles covers, which included: "Come Together", "She came in through the bathroom window" and "With A Little Help From My Friends".  Lighters flickered momentarily between raindrops for his wedding standards: "Up Where We Belong" and "You Are So Beautiful".  He managed to hit powerful high notes, in his characteristic belting, throaty manner reminiscent of the Cocker of yore.  Like a fine wine, this performer seems to only improve with age.  Backed up by a terrific female bassist, great percussion and terrific background vocals, his seemingly full length concert was a fabulous opening for this tour.  During his final "Cry Me a River" he soulfully belted the line: "Where've all the good times gone?"  The only possible reply to that is: "They are still here Joe, still here after all these years!"

After an unnecessarily long intermission given the deteriorating weather conditions, Steve Miller finally joined us opening with the crowd pleasing "Rock'n Me",  quickly followed by "The Joker".  The sound however seemed to be a bit off for them, the drums not as powerful and syncopated as they should have been, and the feel for quite a while was that of a rote performance.  They lacked the energy and "oomph" that Cocker charmed the audience with, and not until "Serenade" did Miller begin to truly sound like himself. The ray of light in this entire performance was Steve's partner of 32 years, Norton Buffalo on Harmonica and congas.

The band's song list included popular tunes such as "Take Your Money and Run", "Lining in the USA", "Abracadabra", but the highlight for this listener was a beautiful rendition of "Wild Mountain Honey" featuring Miller's unusual sitar-guitar.  The crowd joyfully square-danced in the rain to "Dance Dance Dance", but seemed a bit lost during a block of four blues songs performed by guest vocalist Sonny Charles.  Charles, an energetic and talented performer, seemed a little out of place in this tour.  Perhaps it was his choice of songs, perhaps the fact that they were delivered as a block, but it didn't work and the crowd cooled a bit.

Spurred by the increasing rain, and perhaps the unrecognizable R&B tunes, many concert viewers started to leave.  They sadly missed an uncharacteristically chatty Steve Miller, several instrument exchanges showing the range of this talented guitarist, and a lovely "Fly Like an Eagle" that regained the crowd's warmth.  Despite their seeming lack of emotional investment into the evening, Steve Miller Band still rocks, but in this reviewer's opinion, should perhaps rock out a bit more enthusiastically!  To top a lackluster second half of the show, the crowd was not regaled with an encore, much to the audience's surprise! END

EDITOR’S NOTE:

The Police were a reggae influence British rock band during the 1980s, and were one of the most popular groups in the world during this time. The achieved fame with their first hit, Roxanne, and had many hits later such as Message In A Bottle, Don't Stand So Close to Me, and Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic.

The band member Sting pursued a Solo career in 1984 and two years later in 1986 they played their last concert together. Since then fans and the music industry has been waiting for them to reunite.

In 2007 rumors on the Internet surfaced stating they would reunite for a world tour, and indeed they are true. Sting's Website released news stating "As the 30th anniversary of the first Police single approaches, discussions have been underway as to how this will be commemorated. While we can confirm that there will indeed be something special done to mark the occasion, the depth of the band's involvement still remains undetermined."

On
February 12, 2007 the tour was announced.

POLICE TAKE WEST PALM BEACH IN GRAND STYLE AS FINAL TOUR DRAWS BIG CROWDS

By JEANETTE SCHNURMACHER

If one is to believe Police guitarist Andy Summers, last Saturday night fans at the Cruzan Amphitheater (used to be Sound Advice)  in Palm Beach witnessed the final concert that this famed rock band will ever perform together.  And if indeed it is their finale, they are leaving us in grand style!

Although a very well-known performer in his own right, The Police concert opened with

Musician, singer, songwriter Elvis Costello. An early London “Pub Scene” performer in the ‘70’s, his involvement in “punk rock” and “new wave” continued his rise to popularity during the ‘80’s. His marriage to jazz singer-piano player Diana Krall at Elton John’s estate was highly covered by the press.  Costello was wonderful as ever and offered fans a true two-for-one concert experience with his fabulous rendition of such popular songs that included “Pump It Up”, “Everyday I Write the Book”, “Radio Radio”, and “What's So Funny 'Bout Peace Love and Understanding”.

The crowd-pleasing British trio performed their Reggae infused rock with as much gusto and perfection as they did in the 70's.  The crowd belted out “Message in a Bottle” along with bassist and front man Sting, who encouraged the participation during many of the numbers.  Youthful and vibrant, his voice is still the remarkable signature of this popular band, and is sounding clear and strong as ever.

The playlist included many well-received tunes, among which we heard “Walking on the Moon” , “Demolition Man”,  and a beautifully crafted “Voices Inside My Head” which led into “When the World is Running Down”.  Other crowd pleasers included “You Make the Best of What's Still Around”; a spirited “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic”, during which the crowd filled in the "ee-oh-ohh" backing vocals; and “Can't Stand Losing You”.

The high-powered encore treated us to “Roxanne” and “King of Pain”, all punctuated by the great lyrical guitar riffs delivered by Andy Summers, fabulous drums by still strong and speedy  Stewart Copeland and the unmistakable  soulful bass and vocals by the gifted Sting, which reminded this writer of how much The Police have been missed in the music scene.  END

SR 429 RUNS OUT OF MONEY

By Mike Scott

Although Mayor Land has managed to get his name placed on the extension of the Maitland Boulevard part of the supposed beltway around the area, after a major fear of the SR 429 gobbling up all the homes between SR441 and SR 46 ended, it looks like the money tree for funding has been clipped at its roots.

The economy slowdown may have caused the people in the know to go on record that "There isn't no money to build it", but the plight of those in the suggested pathway still has made trying to sell out to anyone else a problem.

Even with the highway now a "good bye way", at least for now, no realtor really has much hope of convincing someone that they should take a chance on buying land that may at a moments notice become state-owned. A real problem, since the state can easily just march in and take over everything in its path if the funds become available.

Even with that, at least one party has claimed that they got approval for a development in the path of the impending SR429, according to one of the legal counsels that represents some of the homeowners. While rumors have been around that Building & Zoning was likely to drag its feet on any such approvals, if the story is true, then it may well open the floodgates for a group from Las Vegas that has been talking about offering options to those in the path of SR429 so they can interest a major builder.

Hard to understand in light of the current limited new building but if true, then it might offer those who were facing a minimal offer for their land something to consider.

One owner with ten acres has been biting his nails as months rolled by. The impending destruction of homes by the expansion of the proposed SR 429 was to turn part of his property into a retention pond, while the house, and those of his  neighbors was to be taken by the State for the roadway.  They had already resigned themselves to moving until the State backed off.

LATINO MUSIC GOES MAINSTREAM G

Salsa and classical blends well at Bob CarrOES MA

INSTREAM

The impact of Latino influence now has reached into the domain of those who appreciate classical music. Linking the Salsa rhythms to those of more classical themes, the performance of a well-known Latino group drew many non-Latino music lovers to the 2PM performance. While it may seem out of place to put a 5-piece band center stage among the more sedate violins, bass players, and reeds, the meld didn't seem to bother the audience. Although the occasional Spanish encouragement from the audience may be out of place at the venue, and more suited to a stadium, the mostly Latino audience seem unbothered. END

Meeting Gives Public A chance To Ask Questions

About Art as an Investment Inflation Hedge

In the current flurry of failing real estate prices, many of those who thought a second home might be a hedge against inflation are rethinking their situation. Just as those in the know say real estate cannot help but go up (eventually), many advisors suggest that investing in art, particularly that of artists whose reputations are on the rise, might be worth consideration. Being able to talk one-on-one with the artist often allows for asking specific questions about future prospects. A meeting held at a Winter Park gallery gave local art collectors an opportunity to consider how art can be used to hedge inflationary concerns. Jan Brewster of Living Artists Gallery has a wide selection of art which can be considered as part of such a hedge program.

Apopka Players Continue To Score

Once again, The Blue Darters rack up an impressive win and move on to the next level of play. The season's closer cinched the team's hold and they didn't let the fans down while doing it. The Knights thought they had it made until the 17-14 final score.  The win, which cinched the Class 6A, District 4 top spot was the first district topper in 6 years of trying. Coach Rick Darlington, who had been away in Georgia was doubly pleased since the East Ridge record included a good solid win over Apopka last season. They came to the contest with a 6-2,3-1 record against the Blue Darters 7-1,4-0 tally.  It wasn't until the 4th quarter that Apopka hit its stride. Only 7-minutes remained with Apopka still holding strong with a 17-7 lead from Bob Berry's 22-yard field goal. The Knights  just could not get past the strong Blue Darter defense in the last quarter. Then, when Chad Creek put it into the hands of Don Tolson of the Knights to challenge, it was too little, too late, leaving the Blue Darters to take the victory.

It's called "SONARLURE", and it is being promoted right here in Apopka by a PR firm that specializes in starting from "scratch" firms that hope to capture an entire industry. Unlike any other fishing lure, it uses the science of Fluid Dynamics to send out signals which make fish want to attack the hook, even when there is no bait on it. Tested in Alaska, still suffering from the Valdez spill, it created such a result (Plenty of fish, some larger than the people who caught them) that a further test in Scotland was tried. Same result, this time from more than a mile deep. It seems the fish just can't resist "SONARLURE". There is a special low, low price deal at their website (http://www.sonarlure.com) to get lures in return for filing research reports. Well worth the look!

The latest version of the popular music system has once again made headlines in the electronic trade papers. Will "Take Your Shoes Off" Solve The Problem being touted during campaign ever materialize?

The TSA's new rules went into effect and throughout OIA, some breathed a sigh of relief. With the heavily touted additional parking for pickup of passengers (at a fee), and the lessening of fear among some passengers at least of terrorists not being interested in nearby Disney as "ground zero", .it may appear the pressure is coming off. Not so, say experts. Orlando is still a prime target even if nobody has tried anything major as yet. Although the public has to take it's shoes off to get through security, many question if seizing small bottles of mouthwash and shampoo is really protecting anybody.
