Cocker performed the opening set at an attempt to recreate the event Woodstock '94 as one of the few alumni who played at the original Woodstock Festival in 1969. He lives on the Mad Dog Ranch in Crawford, Colorado, Cocker was awarded an OBE in the Queen's 2007 Birthday Honors list for services to music.[1] To celebrate receiving his award in mid December 2007, Cocker played two concerts in London and in his home town of Sheffield. Considering the number of sonf Cocker performed at Cruzon, it was almost a concert on its own. In point of fact, it was very obvious that at the end of his performance which was obviously intended to be the opening act for Miller, that members of the audience packed up and went home, underscoring the popularity he has with those of the “Woodstock Generation.”
THE RETURN OF JOE COCKER & THE STEVE MILLER BAND
by Jeannette Schnurmacher
Amid
the season's first active thunderstorm, hundreds of fans braved
the fairly steady rain and occasional thunderclap and lightning to
witness the opening night for the Joe Cocker/ Steve Miller Band
summer concert tour on Saturday, May 24th at the Cruzan
Amphitheater in West Palm Beach, Fl.
The British rocker and Woodstock legend Joe Cocker opened the evening with a terrific and spirited performance. Backed up by a dynamic band, he delivered his impassioned renditions with energy and spunk, delighting the crowd with such standards as: "Feelin' Alright", "The Letter", "When the Night Comes", and a few of his Beatles covers, which included: "Come Together", "She came in through the bathroom window" and "With A Little Help From My Friends". Lighters flickered momentarily between raindrops for his wedding standards: "Up Where We Belong" and "You Are So Beautiful". He managed to hit powerful high notes, in his characteristic belting, throaty manner reminiscent of the Cocker of yore. Like a fine wine, this performer seems to only improve with age. Backed up by a terrific female bassist, great percussion and terrific background vocals, his seemingly full length concert was a fabulous opening for this tour. During his final "Cry Me a River" he soulfully belted the line: "Where've all the good times gone?" The only possible reply to that is: "They are still here Joe, still here after all these years!"
After an unnecessarily long intermission given the deteriorating weather conditions, Steve Miller finally joined us opening with the crowd pleasing "Rock'n Me", quickly followed by "The Joker". The sound however seemed to be a bit off for them, the drums not as powerful and syncopated as they should have been, and the feel for quite a while was that of a rote performance. They lacked the energy and "oomph" that Cocker charmed the audience with, and not until "Serenade" did Miller begin to truly sound like himself. The ray of light in this entire performance was Steve's partner of 32 years, Norton Buffalo on Harmonica and congas.
The band's song list included popular tunes such as "Take Your Money and Run", "Lining in the USA", "Abracadabra", but the highlight for this listener was a beautiful rendition of "Wild Mountain Honey" featuring Miller's unusual sitar-guitar. The crowd joyfully square-danced in the rain to "Dance Dance Dance", but seemed a bit lost during a block of four blues songs performed by guest vocalist Sonny Charles. Charles, an energetic and talented performer, seemed a little out of place in this tour. Perhaps it was his choice of songs, perhaps the fact that they were delivered as a block, but it didn't work and the crowd cooled a bit.
Spurred by the increasing rain, and perhaps the unrecognizable R&B tunes, many concert viewers started to leave. They sadly missed an uncharacteristically chatty Steve Miller, several instrument exchanges showing the range of this talented guitarist, and a lovely "Fly Like an Eagle" that regained the crowd's warmth. Despite their seeming lack of emotional investment into the evening, Steve Miller Band still rocks, but in this reviewer's opinion, should perhaps rock out a bit more enthusiastically! To top a lackluster second half of the show, the crowd was not regaled with an encore, much to the audience's surprise! END
The
Police were a reggae influence British rock band during the 1980s,
and were one of the most popular groups in the world during this
time. The achieved fame with their first hit, Roxanne, and had
many hits later such as Message In A Bottle, Don't Stand So Close
to Me, and Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic.
The band member Sting pursued a Solo career in 1984 and two years
later in 1986 they played their last concert together. Since then
fans and the music industry has been waiting for them to reunite.
In 2007 rumors on the Internet surfaced stating they would reunite
for a world tour, and indeed they are true. Sting's Website
released news stating "As the 30th anniversary of the first Police
single approaches, discussions have been underway as to how this
will be commemorated. While we can confirm that there will indeed
be something special done to mark the occasion, the depth of the
band's involvement still remains undetermined."
On February 12, 2007 the tour was announced.
POLICE TAKE WEST PALM BEACH IN GRAND STYLE AS FINAL TOUR DRAWS BIG CROWDS
By JEANETTE
SCHNURMACHER
If one is to believe Police guitarist Andy Summers, last Saturday night fans at the Cruzan Amphitheater (used to be Sound Advice) in Palm Beach witnessed the final concert that this famed rock band will ever perform together. And if indeed it is their finale, they are leaving us in grand style!
Although a very well-known performer in his own right, The Police concert opened with
Musician, singer, songwriter Elvis Costello. An early London “Pub Scene” performer in the ‘70’s, his involvement in “punk rock” and “new wave” continued his rise to popularity during the ‘80’s. His marriage to jazz singer-piano player Diana Krall at Elton John’s estate was highly covered by the press. Costello was wonderful as ever and offered fans a true two-for-one concert experience with his fabulous rendition of such popular songs that included “Pump It Up”, “Everyday I Write the Book”, “Radio Radio”, and “What's So Funny 'Bout Peace Love and Understanding”.
The crowd-pleasing British trio performed their Reggae infused rock with as much gusto and perfection as they did in the 70's. The crowd belted out “Message in a Bottle” along with bassist and front man Sting, who encouraged the participation during many of the numbers. Youthful and vibrant, his voice is still the remarkable signature of this popular band, and is sounding clear and strong as ever.
The playlist included many well-received tunes, among which we heard “Walking on the Moon” , “Demolition Man”, and a beautifully crafted “Voices Inside My Head” which led into “When the World is Running Down”. Other crowd pleasers included “You Make the Best of What's Still Around”; a spirited “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic”, during which the crowd filled in the "ee-oh-ohh" backing vocals; and “Can't Stand Losing You”.
The high-powered encore treated us to “Roxanne” and “King of Pain”, all punctuated by the great lyrical guitar riffs delivered by Andy Summers, fabulous drums by still strong and speedy Stewart Copeland and the unmistakable soulful bass and vocals by the gifted Sting, which reminded this writer of how much The Police have been missed in the music scene.
